AVON 
Avon , a bigger mystery than the Marie Celeste, why the government of the time inflicted it on us no one knows, it's fair to say , in my opinion, that it bears no relevance to your family history research apart from the area covered by the BRISTOL &AVON FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY, which is the best thing that came out of it.
The area covered, what is now Bristol, North Somerset & South Gloucester shire , also about the same area in the 1800's , please see map above
The county of 'AVON ' will not go away , still being used by major companies and map makers for addresses in Bristol, so adding to the confusion .
