Bristol Registration Districts
This is an area of confusion to many, with people stating they were born in 'Bristol' but later finding out they were registered in a Glos or Somerset area.
The rough rule of thumb is that , north of the river Avon is Gloucestershire registration area and the south being Somerset, although there are exceptions , see below.
It is a good guide to check the 'Volume No ', when checking the civil index as this will give you an idea what part of Bristol they were born in
Below is a guide to the registration areas.
One main problem is 'BARTON R' (BARTON REGIS) registration district, this is missed by many not realizing that it is the name for the 'CLIFTON' district , that was changed in the 1870's.
Also the 'Clifton/Barton R' district covered a large area , much more than Clifton alone.
