Explanation

The 1881 census which has been transcribed by the LDS, on to CD including Scotland.

This has been one of most valuable tools to the family Historian in the last years along with the Internet.

Like today , many people did not trust the idea of a census , so variations can be expected.

Names, this caused me problems as I have a ancestor who had three different Christian names on the census, many did not like their first given names ,so  used another Christian name,  you have to be open as to their names.

Also names were written down as the enumerator spelt them ,hence 'Scadden' could become  'Scaddon' , 'Scaddeng', 'Scadding' etc, this is how names changed over the years.

As you go through the Proof  , you will gradually get picture of their true ages.

I recommend you get a guide ,like the 'Eve McLaughlin' guide ;  ''The Census 1841-1891 Use & Interpretation'  , a very good booklet for only £2 , again available at good Genealogy sources.

1841

Was taken on the 6th & 7th June 1841, you may find men and boys not with their families as this was around harvest time.

The 1841 only had Name and Occupation, there is no link to relationships.  Also the place of birth was either in County or out , out being another County,  FP (foreign parts) & Country.

Also their ages were , in case of adults , marked down to the nearest multiple of five and children , their correct age. So much confusion to Adults real ages, as it was entered either correctly or marked up & down by the five years.

The place of birth can be misleading , as paupers in those days were paid by the Parish, hence when the census came round they claimed to be from the parish so they would not lose their 'Settlement' or relief , and be sent to their real parishes.

1851 onwards
