Web site for a Society

This is not meant to tell you how to build a web site but to give you some tips and guidance.

Domain name

I would recommend you get yourselves one as soon as possible, even if you do not intend to build a site soon You can get one registered very cheaply and it does give a good impression when people are searching and looking at  your site.

I would also recommend it is registered in the societies name, not in an individual name.

One point to note is that , when you register your domain name you will be asked if you want your address to be shown in Nominet's 'Who is' database . If you say yes, then your the address you registered the domain name can be seen be all on the web, I would recommend saying no to this question, then the details are held just by the company you registered  with.

Hosting

You can use several types of web hosts below, but I would recommend getting a commercial hosting site against the free ones available, it can cost very little for a basic package.

(This company has just won the Computeractive magazine award for the best web host this year.)

You can also see if there is a local web hosting company, this could benefit in the support you would get.

Again I would register the company in the societies name.

By using a company like this, it gives you freedom to up load more information and photographs etc also  without advertising .The other advantage is that you can have e mail addresses linked with your domain name, thus not having to give out personal e mail addresses for your officers or for information about the society.

I would advise against using anybody's ISP, s this can tie the site to that member and their ISP.

You can also try Lycos  or UK geocities  , these are free but will have advertising on your web pages.

Building the site

Building a basic web site is very easy, all the hosts above provide basic software and web page building guides.

I use  Microsoft 'Frontpage' which is very good and easy to learn but to take advantage of it's full potential you have to make sure your host supports 'Frontpage extensions', however  there are many other software packages available and it is really a matter of choice.

I have included a few links to those sites that helped in building this site.

If you are a small FHS/Local history society and would like a presence on the web. I will gladly build you a basic web site for free, to get you started. Please    Thanks, Alan Ward
