Joint Productions
Spring Plays
The spring plays this year are two one act plays: James And The Giant Peach and The Witches (original stories by by Roald Dahl, adapted for the stage by David Wood). Both plays will be joint productions between the adult and youth theatres. The performances will be over two weekends on Friday and Saturday evenings: 9th, 10th, 16th, 17th May. The curtain rises at 7pm (doors open at 6:30pm). Tickets £6 and £5 for concessions.
James And The Giant Peach
The story of Roald Dahl's classic tale is faithfully told by James himself and the insect characters - Miss Spider, Old-Green-Grasshopper, Centipede, Ladybird and Earthworm. The play begins at the end of the story, when James and his friends are living in the giant peach stone in Central Park, New York. A tour guide brings a party of tourists (the audience) to see this major attraction, and James and his friends tell the story of how they came to live in New York. The insects play the other roles, like James' cruel Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker, and the epic journey across the Atlantic is acted out with live action, puppetry and storytelling.
The Witches
This is a faithful adaptation of Roald Dahl's classic story in which Boy and his Grandmother defeat the Grand High Witch and her followers, who are holding a Conference in an English seaside hotel. During the struggle, Boy gets turned into a mouse. The Witches are nothing like the ones who wear pointed hats and fly on broomsticks - they look very much like ordinary women, which helps their deception. The play offers many opportunities for illusions and inventive puppetry. Humour is provided by the vulgar Jenkins family, whose son, Bruno, also becomes a mouse.
