Harty

Harty was a separate island to Elmley and Sheppey until they joined together to be named Sheppey. Harty was the location for the ferry crossing across the Swale to the mainland before there was a bridge. The inn there, called the Harty Ferry, is still there today, even though there are no crossings. There is also a church (pictured on the left) at Harty, which dates back to the 11th century, and is the only building on Sheppey that does not have any gas, electricity or even running water! There is an annual festival held there, and proves to be quite popular, even though it is 8 miles from the main road!

Elmley

Elmley, like Harty, was once an island, along with Harty and Sheppey. Elmley is home to the RSPB nature reserve where birds and other wildlife live. This is very popular all year round with local people and visitors to the island. At Elmley, there isn't much to see apart from the nature reserve and the excellent views of Sheppey and the mainland.
