Division One:-

St Chads TTC 3 Thompson Insurance A 7
Seaburn Dene NC 10 Old England 0
Thompson Insurance A 0 Silksworth CC B 10
West CA A 4 St Chads TTC 6

Leaders Thompson Insurance A finished the season by beating St Chads TTC by 7 sets to 3, with Allan Thompson winning two of his singles as did Andrew Wilkinson and David Blackburne and the latter two players also won the doubles against Keith Weatherby and David Bissett. However the performance of the evening was Keith Weatherby for St Chads who won all three of his singles including an 11/9, 11/5, 11/13, 11/7 win over Andrew Wilkinson.

Thompson Insurance A had to concede their match against second place Silksworth CC B with a recorded score of 10 sets to 0 in favour of the Silksworth side due to a clash of fixtures as both teams were still in the team handicap competition. St Chads beat West CA A by 6 sets to 4 with Keith Weatherby again taking all three singles plus the doubles with Jim Staines and Steve Penman ensured a victory in this very close match by winning two of his three singles. For West CA A Geoff Salter won two of his three singles plus one each form Rod Roberts and Mark Shingler. Old England conceded their match 10 sets to 0 in favour of Seaburn Dene NC as there was insufficient time to complete this fixture in the league programme.

Team Handicap Final:-

The top two teams in Division One also made it to the final of this season's Team Handicap competition and was between Thompson Insurance A who had lead the division for virtually the whole of this season and won the title by some fifteen points and Silksworth CC B who had finished in second place. All of the players in the Thompson side had to give starts of between 2 and 9 points to the players representing Silksworth.

Graeme Barella made the perfect start for the Silksworth CC B side by beating Chris Blake 21/7, 21/13, this was then followed by Kevin Wilson beating Andrew Wilkinson 21/16, 21/19 to give them a two set advantage. In another very close match Anthony Barella managed to beat Eddie Smith 21/18, 22/20 before Andrew Wilkinson pulled a set back by beating Graeme Barella 21/17, 21/17 to make the score 4 sets to 1. With Silksworth CC B requiring to win one more set , from the remaining four, Kevin Wilson ensured there was not going to be any slip up by taking the next set against Eddie Smith 21/13, 21/10 and so take the match and the trophy by 5 sets to 1.

Individual Handicap Semi-finals and Final:-

The four players who reached the semi-finals of this competition were Philip Dixon (Seaburn Dene) and Graeme Barella, Kevin Wilson (both fresh from their triumph in the Team Handicap competition) and also bernie Morris also from Silksworth CC B. In the first semi-final Philip Dixon (off plus 5) was drawn against Kevin Wilson (scratch) and lost 21/17, 19/21, 15/21, 21/19, 19/21 in a mathc that could easily have gone either way.

In the second semi-final Graeme Barella (off scratch) was drawn against his playing collegue and also his coach Bernie Morris who was off plus 1. Graeme won 21/17, 21/16, 21/13 to reach his fourth individual final in six years and he is still a cadet. The final was therefore a match between two of the three players who had successfully taken the team title and therefore they were both set up for the 'Handicap double'. Graeme had the advantage of a four point start in each set, and made full use of it by beating Kevin 21/10, 21/8, 21/18 in an excellent table tennis contest where each player gave of his best.

Division Three:-

In the final match in Division Three, which was played on the 8th April, Redby CA C who are already champions in this division, beat Silksworth IM B by 9 sets to 1 with David Kerr winning all of his three singles and Malcolm Deneven going one better by not only winning each of his three singles but with Ray Burchell also taking the doubles. Ray Burchell unfortunately could not complete his hat trick of singles when going down 7/11, 6/11, 11/6, 9/11 against Kevin Flett who won the solitary set for Silksworth IM B. Silksworth IM B although fininshing at the foot of Division Three have completed their league programme despite a shortage of players which has meant that on a number of occasions they have only been able to produce two players.

Team Handicap Semi Finals:-

Thompson Insurance A beat Durham Community Association by 5 sets to 1. In a match between Division One champions Thompson Insurance A and Division Two champions Durham CA, the players from Thompson Insurance A were having to give a number of points start (between 5 and 12) in each game, against players from the lower division. Durham CA made a good start when Brian Bateman beat Chris Blake 22/20, 21/18 in the first set. Unfortunately there have been a number of matches conceded in the final week of our season, which will undoubtedly have some impact on the final positions of our league particularly in Division One. This is a rather unsatisfactory position for all of the players, whose main interest is simply to play table tennis, and has been brought about mainly by a clash of fixtures between some players playing in other leagues, work and other commitments, injuries to key players, the unavailability of some facilities due to a number of reasons and in some instances the success of players and teams progressing through handicap competitions. Team secretaries, players and various league officials have worked extremely hard to find some solution to this problem and to reduce any impact to an absolute minimum in order that the league positions are decided, as far as is practical, on the table tennis table.

From the matches which have been played the results can be summarised as follows. Thompson Insurance A with only two players, Andrew Wilkinson and Eddie Smith, went through their sets undefeated and beat Seaburn Dene NC by 7 sets to 3. Silksworth CC B regained second place by a series of results including an 8 sets to 2 win over Old England with Graeme Barella winning all of his three singles and Kevin Wilson and Anthony Barella each winning two of their three singles and then combining to take the doubles. Gary Sangster won the two sets for Old England. Old England, in a match where each team could only at the last moment produce two players, beat Silksworth CC A by 6 sets to 3. Alan Atkinson won three out of three of his singles and then combined with Neil Herrington, who also won two of his three singles, to also take the doubles for Old England. Alvin Robson won two of his singles including beating Neil Herrington 11/6, 11/8, 11/6 whilst George Watson won one to complete the scoring for Silksworth CC A.

St Aidans B 4 Silksworth IM A 6
St Gabriels B 7 St Gabriels A 3

St John TTC A 6 Silksworth IM B 4
St John TTC B 10 St Aidans D 0

30th March 2008
Division One:-

St Aidans A 4 Silksworth CC A 6
St Chads TTC 8 Old England 2
Seaburn Dene NC 7 St Aidans A 3
Thompson Insurance A 5 West CA A 5
West CA B 2 Seaburn Dene NC 8

In Division One second place is now reduced to a race between St Chads TTC and Silksworth CC B. St Chads currently hold a four point advantage in the league in terms of results to date, and only have two matches still to play. Silksworth CC B however could turn this to their advantage as they still have four matches to play to complete their fixtures.

With West CA B firmly stuck at the foot of Division One the next three places are still between Seaburn Dene NC, St Aidans A and Silksworth CC A. Seaburn Dene have helped their cause by beating West CA B by 8 sets to 2 and also St Aidans A by 7 sets to 3 with Chris Dixon winning six out of six, Ken Bowman four out of six, Philip Dixon three out of three in the singles as well as the first two players also winning one out of two in the doubles. They now have a four point advantage over Silksworth CC A, and also three additional matches over each of the other two teams. In what appears to be a difficult program to complete their fixtures Seaburn Dene need a further five points to be absolutely safe. Silksworth CC A reduced the gap to one point behind St Aidans A by beating them by 6 sets to 4 with David Robson winning all of his three singles plus the doubles with George Watson who also won two of his three singles.

Division Two:-

Durham CA 8 Redby CA B 2

St Gabriels B 8 Redby CA B 2

Durham Community Association are Division Two champions with Thompson Insurance B also confirmed as runners up.

Redby CA C need one win out of their three remaining matches against each of the bottom three sides to finish as Division Three champions. This would then confirm St John TTC A as runners up as they cannot now be caught by St Aidans D.

Team Handicap Round Three:-

Durham CA beat St Gabriels B by 5 sets to 4 with Gavin Bestford winning all of his three sets and Brian Bateman winning two of his three sets. In reply Stephen Young won two sets, Geoff Young and David Revell also each winning one set for St Gabriels B.

24th March 2008
Division One:-

Old England 9 West CA B 1
St Aidans A 4 Old England 6
St Chads TTC 8 Seaburn Dene NC 2
Silksworth CC A 5 West CA A 5
Silksworth CC A 2 St Chads TTC 8
Silksworth CC B 10 West CA B 0
Thompson Insurance A 8 Silksworth CC A 2
West CA A 3 Silksworth CC B 7
West CA B 0 Silksworth CC A 10

Following Thompson Insurance winning the Division One title the focus is now on the question which team will finish in second place. Old England is currently in fourth place and must appear out of it, even though both Silksworth CC B and St Chads TTC have still to play Thompson Insurance and Old England in the final few matches of the season. These matches however are more likely to decide the battle between Silksworth CC B and St Chads TTC than allow Old England to make up the difference of some nine league points in their remaining four matches where there is a maximum of only sixteen points at stake.

St Chads TTC who currently has one fewer match to play than Silksworth CC B has kept up the pressure on Silksworth CC B by beating Seaburn Dene NC 8 sets to 2 and Silksworth CC A by a similar scoreline. Keith Weatherby in these two matches won all of his six singles with Steve Penman and Bart Vermoesen both made a major contribution by each winning three out of the three played in their respective singles. Silksworth CC B who currently hold second place following their 7 sets to 3 win over West CA A and a 10 sets to 0 win over bottom placed West CA B. Graeme Barella for Silksworth won the six singles and there were also useful wins from Kevin Wilson who is returning from injury, Anthony Barella and Bernie Morris.

At the other end of the table West CA B will finish in bottom place and the remaining places at the foot is between St Aidans A, Silksworth CC A and Seaburn Dene NC who currently have the opportunity to make up lost ground by taking points from some of their games in hand. The problem may however be decided partly by the availability of premises as the league season closes within the next three weeks and they may be forced with the decision having to concede matches in this rather tight schedule.

Division Two:-

Durham CA 9 Thompson Insurance B 1
Redby CA A 3 Redby CA B 7
Redby CA B 3 St Aidans B 7
Redby CA B 3 Silksworth IM A 7
St Aidans B 6 St Gabriels B 4
St Gabriels A 2 Durham CA 8
Silksworth IM A 8 St Gabriels A 2
Thompson Insurance B 8 Silksworth IM A 2

Durham Community Association are virtually in an unassailable position in Division Two by only requiring two further league points from their two remaining matches, and in fact one may be sufficient in view of their superior sets for position against second place Thompson Insurance B who at the same time only require one further league point out of the three remaining matches to secure second place. Durham CA had two excellent wins the first was against Thompson Insurance B by 9 sets to 1, and the second was against St Gabriels A by 8 sets to 2. Thompson Insurance B having lost ground against the leaders improved their chances by a 8 sets to 2 win over third place Silksworth IM A.
